I visited New Zealand in January 2016. Unfortunately most of the photos I have of the places I went to in NZ are phone camera photos, which means they aren’t the best, so I have been putting off writing about the places I visited until now. In the next few weeks, I am finally going to write about some of the actual places I visited in NZ during the 8 day road-ish trip. This post is about Moeraki Boulders in Otago.
Moeraki Boulders, Moeraki, Otago coast in Hampden
After we arrived in Christchurch where we stayed for the night, the first stop the next day was Moeraki Boulders in Otago.
These boulders are large, natural, marble-shaped boulders on the beach in the city of Moeraki in the region Otago in the South Island of New Zealand. They are an attraction because of their shape and the fact that they are naturally occurring. People come here to see and photograph them.
What is more curious is that they are not consistent all the way through the entire boulder, the center of the boulders (some are cracked) are yellow, much like a hard boiled egg.

Getting here/location:
The beach is located along the Hampden-Palmerston Road/State Highway 1 and faces east.
There are car parking spaces along the cliff. It is easy to locate as it’s not in thick forests or deep in the countryside, and there are visible signage. Also there is a cafe at the top of the cliff by the same name (a conveniently located business, the boulders are free to access).
Recommended stay time:
This depends entirely on what you plan to do here. Photography can take any amount of time and the results would really depend on the weather. As you can see it was quite cold and grey when I went.
*Tips for Photographers:*
Luckily for you, the beach faces east so you can get some nice sunrise shots if you can be bothered to get down there that early in the cold. There are seaweed on the beach and lots of wet sand as the beach depth (distance to the water) is quite narrow.

From what I can tell, it’s official website is www.moerakiboulders.com even if it doesn’t seem that way. The cafe also has a website but ends in co.nz, they are different websites, so don’t get confused!
