Going through the security check at Sydney airport is about to become much faster than before.

The Sydney Kingsford Smith International Airport in Australia is removing the need to take out laptops and electronic devices as well as liquids during security scans, which used to be a mandatory requirement and still is at many airports.

Electronic devices and liquids will no longer be required to be removed from your carry-on luggage for the security checking process thanks to new security scanners in the T1 international terminal. This will greatly speed up the security processing for Sydney Airport, reducing the time passengers will spend waiting in line at the security check. This will remove the queues that build up as people stand at the counter taking things out and then packing them back up.

To further streamline the process, 15 new lanes will be added to the security check by the end of 2025.

Sydney airport is not the first airport to implement new scanners that eliminate the need for electronic devices and liquids to be removed. Below is a list of 16 other airports that have eliminated the need for electronic devices to be removed from bags at security:

  • Europe is currently deploying an EU-wide mandate for all airports where CT scanners are being rolled out in major cities, including Amsterdam, Barcelona, Frankfurt, Rome, and Zurich.
  • Hong Kong – July 2024
  • Major middle eastern air transport hubs Doha and Dubai have also implemented CT scanners since 2023 that removed the need for electronic devices to be taken out of bags for scanning
  • Singapore Changi Airport also had this in place since 2023

In 2024, Sydney International Airport’s T2 Terminal also removed the need for laptops to be taken out of bags. It also introduced a new self-serve bag-drop facility.
